Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to trace the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet without hesitation or major mistakes.

Materials

  • A sheet of paper per student
  • Alphabet tracing sheets (one per letter)

Warm-up

  • Review the alphabet with the students. Give them a few examples of letters and have them trace them with their finger.
  • Review the concept of upper and lowercase letters.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of tracing letters. Show the students how to hold the pencil or marker and how to properly trace each letter.
  • Demonstrate how to trace each letter of the alphabet, starting with the letters with the fewest strokes and working up to the letters with the most strokes.
  • Encourage the students to watch and follow along as you demonstrate.

Guided Practice

  • With the students working in pairs, have one student trace a letter on a piece of paper while the other student watches and provides feedback and encouragement.
  • Switch roles and have the students trace another letter.

Independent Practice

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice to assess their ability to accurately and neatly trace the letters.
  • Collect and review their completed tracing worksheets to assess their ability to trace the letters correctly.
