Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Various classroom materials (e.g. scissors, glue sticks, crayons)
  • Baggy pants or old jeans
  • String
  • Markers or crayons

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch their muscles by doing some light physical activity (e.g. running in place, jumping rope, doing arm stretches).
  • Ask students to share what they are most excited about for the upcoming school year.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of classroom safety and the importance of using classroom materials safely.
  • Review the proper way to use scissors, crayons, and other classroom materials.
  • Demonstrate how to use scissors safely by holding the handles with the thumb and index finger, keeping the blades closed until ready to use, and only cutting on the intended surface.
  • Discuss any other classroom safety rules and regulations.

Guided Practice

  • Provide each student with a piece of paper and a pair of scissors.
  • Lead the students through a series of cutting exercises, including cutting along the straight edge of the paper, cutting along the curved edge of the paper, and cutting out a shape from the cardboard.
  • Encourage the students to follow the proper cutting technique and to use the cardboard as an intended cutting surface.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each student with a variety of different materials (e.g. string, yarn, ribbon, paperclips, etc.)
  • Have the students work in small groups to create a project using the materials.
  • Ensure that the students are using proper cutting technique and using the intended cutting surface (e.g. cardboard).

Closure

  • Have the students share their projects with the class.
  • Review the proper cutting technique and proper use of the cutting surface.

Assessment: Observe the students during the independent practice and give feedback on their cutting technique and use of the cutting surface. Evaluate the students' final projects, and provide feedback on their use of shapes and colors.
