Topic: Characteristics of Patriotism

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to describe at least three characteristics of being patriotic.

Materials

• Pictures of people demonstrating patriotic behaviors (e.g. saluting the flag, volunteering, participating in a community event)
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what it means to be patriotic.
• Ask for examples of people who are patriotic.
• Write their responses on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that being patriotic means loving and being loyal to your country.
• Ask students to think about the characteristics of their country, such as the language, flag, and national anthem.
• Have them brainstorm ideas for ways to show patriotism, such as singing the national anthem, waving the flag, and respecting the country's leaders.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to come up with a list of ways they can be patriotic.
• Have them share their ideas with the class and discuss any similarities and differences.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the ways they came up with in the previous activity and come up with a creative way to demonstrate that aspect of patriotism.
• Encourage them to be creative and think outside the box.
• Have them present their ideas to the class.

Closure

• Review the different characteristics of patriotism and have students share one thing they learned about being patriotic.
• Remind students that it is important to show patriotism in many different ways and that it is something we can do every day, not just on certain holidays.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the different characteristics of patriotism.
• Collect and review the surveys or class discussions to assess student understanding of what it means to be patriotic.
• Administer a quiz on the characteristics of patriotism to assess student comprehension.
