Map Quest Lesson Plan for Kindergarten Example Students

Topic: Map Quest

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to locate and label different countries on a world map using the skills they have learned in class.

Materials

• World map
• Marking pens
• Worksheet with country names and locations

Warm-up

• Have students stand up and stretch their bodies. Ask them to point to different countries on the map and name them.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the worksheet and explain that the students will be locating and labeling different countries on a world map.
• Show the students how to use the map and point to different countries. Demonstrate how to use the map skills they learned in class, such as finding the opposite sides, using the scale, and using the arrows to orient themselves.
• Have the students take turns using the map and following your directions.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work with a partner and complete the same activity using the map.
• Walk around the room and monitor the students as they work. Offer help and guidance as needed.
• At the end of the activity, have the students share their work with the class and discuss the different countries they found.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose a country not already listed on the worksheet and find it on the map.
• Have the students draw a picture of the country and write the country's name on the picture.
• Have the students write a short sentence describing the country and what it is like.

Closure

• Have the students share their drawings and sentences with the class.
• Review the different countries and what they are like.

Assessment

• Observe the students during independent practice to see if they can accurately label the countries on their own world maps and draw a map of their own country.
• Collect the students' drawings and sentences and assess their understanding of the lesson by looking for understanding of the different countries and their characteristics.
