Free Kindergarten Light And Shadows Exploration Lesson Plan

Topic: Light and shadows

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the concept of light and shadows and how they are created.

Materials

• White poster board
• Flashlight
• Scissors
• Glue
• Colored paper
• Markers or crayons

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have ever seen light or shadows before. Ask them to share their experiences or examples.
• Show the students the white poster board and the flashlight. Ask them to guess what will happen if you move the flashlight around the poster board.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to the students that light comes in different forms, such as sunlight, moonlight, and lamp light.
• Tell the students that shadows are the opposite of light and appear when something blocks or obstructs light.
• Ask the students to imagine different objects and situations that could create shadows. Encourage them to share their ideas with the class.

Guided Practice

• Show the students a picture of a shadow on a wall or other surface and ask them to describe what they see.
• Ask the students to think about how the shadow was created, and explain their observations to the class.
• Encourage the students to draw a picture of a shadow they have seen and share it with the class.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of white paper and a pen or pencil.
• Ask the students to draw a picture of a shadow on a wall or other surface and then rub out the shadow with their hand to create a new shadow.
• Have the students share their pictures with the class and explain how they created their shadows.

Closure

• Ask the students to think about the different ways that shadows can be formed.
• Ask the students to share any new or interesting insights they gained about light and shadows during the exploration.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their understanding of light and shadows.
