Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the significance of the dance and ceremony at the end of the school year.

Materials

• Pictures of the dance and ceremony
• Stuffing for the dance puppet
• String for the puppet's arms and legs

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever attended a school dance or ceremony.
• Ask them to share their experiences with the class.
• Explain that at the end of the school year, there is often a dance and ceremony where the students can have fun and show their appreciation for the teachers and staff.

Topic: End of the School Year Dance and Ceremony

• Show the pictures of the dance and ceremony and ask students what they notice.
• Ask them to share any information they have about the dance and ceremony.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that at the end of the school year, there is often a dance and ceremony where the students can have fun and show their appreciation for the teachers and staff.
• Share the handouts with information about the dance and ceremony and go over them together as a class.
• Ask students if they have any questions about the dance and ceremony.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group one of the items from the supply list (e.g. streamers, glitter, markers, construction paper).
• Have the students use the materials to create a special gift to take to the dance and ceremony.
• Have the students share their gift ideas with the class and explain why they chose the materials they did.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work individually or in small groups to create their own special gifts for the dance and ceremony.
• Encourage the students to use their creativity and imagination to come up with unique and personal gifts.

Closure

• Have the students share their gifts with the rest of the class.
• Ask the students to reflect on the importance of giving and receiving gifts in ceremonies and celebrations.
• Ask the students to share any thoughts or feelings about the end of the school year and the upcoming summer vacation.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the gift giving and receiving ceremony and take note of their participation and understanding of the practice.
• Collect and review the students' written reflections on the importance of giving and receiving gifts in celebrations.
• Evaluate the students' participation in the class gift giving and receiving ceremony.
