Kindergarten Color Mixing Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Colors and their mixing

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to name and identify the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and understand the concept of mixing colors to create new colors.

Materials

• A variety of colored pencils, markers, or crayons
• White paper
• Small cups or glasses

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what colors are. Allow a few students to provide examples of colors they know (e.g. red, yellow, blue).
• Ask students if they have ever seen colors mix together before. Allow a few students to provide examples of colors that might be created by mixing colors (e.g. orange, green).

Direct Instruction

• Show students a few small colored balls or pellets and ask them to guess what colors they are.
• Mix the colors together in a cup or small container and ask students to predict what colors will be created.
• Pour the mixed colors out onto a paper plate or small tray and allow students to observe the new colors that were created.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with colored pencils and paper and have them draw a picture of the mixed colors they created.
• Have students share their drawings with the class and discuss how the colors they mixed together created new colors.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with colored pencils, colored construction paper, and markers, and have them experiment with mixing colors on their own.
• Encourage students to try different colors and mix enough colors to create a small collage.
• Have students glue their collages down onto their paper and label each color they used to create their collage.

Closure

• Have students share their collages with the class and explain how they mixed the colors to create their collage.
• Review the concept of color mixing and ask students to give examples of colors they mixed together to create their collage.

Assessment:

• Observe students during independent practice to see if they are able to mix the correct colors to create their collages.
• Collect and review the collages to assess each student's understanding of color mixing.
