Free Animal Group Lesson Plan for Kindergarten Students

Topic: animal group

Objectives & Outcomes

• students will be able to identify the characteristics of different animal groups and classify animals into these groups

Materials

• pictures of different types of animals (e.g. mammals, reptiles, birds, fish)
• chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen or heard of animals before.
• Ask students to name some animals they know.
• Write the names of the animals on the chart paper, creating a small list of animals.

Direct Instruction

• Show the pictures or photographs of various mammals to the class.
• Ask students to look at the pictures and identify which animals are mammals and which are not.
• Ask students to name the characteristics that mammals share (e.g. hair, four limbs, live birth).
• Write the characteristics on the chart paper next to the pictures of the mammals.

Guided Practice

• Show the students a picture of a mammal and ask them to identify the species and give a characteristic or two that the mammal has.
• Repeat with several more pictures or photographs of different mammals.
• As a class, discuss the characteristics that all the mammals have in common.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a set of pictures or photographs of different mammals and ask them to identify the species and give a characteristic or two that the mammal has.
• As the students work, walk around the room to assist and encourage as needed.

Closure

• Review the different characteristics of mammals and the different types of mammals that were learned during the lesson.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about mammals during the lesson.
• Encourage the students to listen to each other and share their ideas.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the sorting activity and see if they are able to classify the animals into the correct group.
• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and see if they can accurately label the different types of mammals.
