Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the importance of staying healthy and safe.

Materials

  • Posters or visuals of healthy habits (e.g. brushing teeth, eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep)
  • Handouts with activities for practicing healthy habits (e.g. finger-painting with healthy foods, making a collage of good sleep habits)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what it means to be healthy. Allow them to share their ideas and explain the concept of health further.
  • Show the class a visualization of healthy habits and ask them to identify the habits shown.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the class that staying healthy is important because it helps us to be safe and feel good.
  • Show the students the visualizations of healthy habits again and have them repeat the names of the habits.
  • Explain that there are five key habits that are important for staying healthy:
  • Wash our hands often with soap and water
  • Eat healthy food
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Be active and play outdoors
  • Use a hand sanitizer or tissues when our hands are not clean
  • Have the students repeat the names of the habits again after you.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into groups of three or four.
  • Give each group a set of cards with images of healthy habits.
  • Have the students work together to match the images to the correct healthy habits.
  • As a class, discuss the correct answers and have the students repeat them.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually or in pairs to create their own cards with images of healthy habits.
  • Give each student a stack of blank cards and some markers or crayons.
  • Have the students use the cards to create a poster or collage showing examples of healthy habits.
  • Encourage the students to be creative and to include as many healthy habits as possible in their poster or collage.

Closure

  • Have the students share their posters or collages with the rest of the class.
  • Ask the students to discuss the importance of healthy habits and how they can help us stay healthy.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and look for understanding of the concepts
  • Collect the students' posters or collages and use them to assess their understanding of healthy habits.
