Topic: Pitch in Music

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand what pitch is in music and how it is measured.

Materials

• Song excerpts with different pitches
• Metronome
• Pitch pipes or strips
• Music staff paper and pencils

Warm-up

• Start the class by asking what they already know about music.
• Ask if they know what pitch is in music and how it is measured.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that pitch is the height of a sound, and it is measured on a scale called the "pitch scale."
• Show the pitch scale and explain how it works: the higher the pitch, the higher the note on the scale; the lower the pitch, the lower the note on the scale.
• Explain that there are different types of pitch in music, including high pitch and low pitch.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify different examples of high pitch and low pitch in a piece of music.
• Have each pair share their examples with the class and explain why they think the sounds are high pitch or low pitch.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a piece of music that they are familiar with and create a visual representation of the pitch in the music.
• Students can use different colors, markers, or pens to create their visual representation, and can use scale sheets or pitch names to label their representation.

Closure

• Have students share their visual representations of pitch with the class.
• Ask students to discuss the different ways that they used to represent pitch and how their visual representations helped them understand the concept of pitch.

Assessment: Observation

• Observe students during independent practice to see if they are able to accurately represent pitch in a song.
• Observe students during the group activity to see if they are able to accurately identify the pitch of the other students' songs.
• Evaluate students' written work to assess their understanding of the concept of pitch and their ability to explain how their visual representation helped them understand pitch.
