Topic: Recognizing and Identifying Numbers

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to recognize and identify the number 5.

Materials

• Flashcards with numbers 1-5
• Pictures of five different objects
• Marker and paper

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can count to five. Allow them to count out loud and help them if they get stuck.
• Ask students to point to where on the body they would touch to show the number five.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students a handout with the number five written on it. Ask them to point to the number five and say "five."
• Ask students to think about how they can tell that this is the number five. What is special about this number? What does it look like? How does it feel?
• Have students practice writing the number five on a separate piece of paper several times.

Guided Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil. Have them draw a picture of a number five and then write the number five next to it.
• Encourage students to use the techniques they learned to help them identify the number five.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil. Have them draw a number five and then write the number five next to it.
• Encourage students to use the techniques they learned to help them identify the number five.

Closure

• Have students share their drawings and their numbers with the class.
• Review the skills that were taught during the lesson, including how to count to five and how to identify the number five.

Assessment
