Topic: Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and use pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in sentences.

Materials

  • Flashcards with a variety of different pronoun, verb, adjective, and adverb cards
  • Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Show the students a few different flashcards with a pronoun, verb, adjective, or adverb on it and have them tell you what it is and what it does.
  • Then, give each student a pen and paper and have them write down as many different pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs as they can think of.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to the students and give them a brief explanation of what each one is and what they do.
  • Show the students more flashcards with pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs on it and have them identify each one and tell you what it does.
  • Then, give each student a copy of the handout with the definitions of pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and have them read through it and try to memorize it.

Guided Practice

  • Next, give the students a short sentence with a pronoun, verb, adjective, and adverb in it and have them identify and explain what each one does.
  • Then, give the students a short passage with several sentences in it and have them identify and explain what each pronoun, verb, adjective, and adverb does in each sentence.
  • Finally, give the students a short story with several paragraphs in it and have them identify and explain what each pronoun, verb, adjective, and adverb does in each paragraph.

Independent Practice

  • Give the students a short passage with several sentences in it and have them rewrite each sentence, replacing any pronouns with nouns, verbs with verbs, adjectives with adjectives, and adverbs with adverbs.
  • For example, if the passage says: "The dog chased the cat," the student might rewrite it as: "The brown dog chased the black cat."
  • Have the students rewrite several passages in this way, then check their work for accuracy.

Closure

  • Review the different types of words that were worked with in the lesson and ask the students to give examples of each.
  • Ask the students to give one new thing they learned about pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they are able to write complete sentences that use the correct type of word.
  • Have the students complete a quiz or worksheet where they have to identify the type of word and correctly use it in a sentence.
