Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to count up to 20 accurately and fluently.
• Students will be able to identify and name basic shapes and colors.
• Students will be able to demonstrate basic motor skills such as running, jumping, dancing, swimming.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Construction paper and scissors
• Magnetic numbers and shapes
• Colored pencils or markers
• Pictures or real objects of various shapes, colors, and sizes
• Song cd or music box
• Dance moves or dance instructions
• Swimming pool or pool toys

Warm-up

• Get the students' attention and have them stand up.
• Ask the students if they can count to 10.
• As they count, have them wave their hand in the air.
• When they reach number 10, have them do a little dance or do a silly action.
• Continue counting to 20, with the students doing a bigger dance or action each time they reach a new number.
• Encourage the students to help each other count and stay focused.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students the cards with the numbers 1-20 on them.
• Ask the students to point to each number as you say it.
• Review the actions or dances that the students did when counting to 10.
• Ask the students to repeat the actions or dances when counting from 1-20.
• Show the students the cards with the animals, shapes, and colors on them.
• Ask the students to point to each item as you say it.
• Encourage the students to name the shapes, colors, and animals as you show them the cards.

Guided Practice

• Have the students sit in a circle.
• Give each student a set of flashcards with numbers, animals, shapes, and colors on them.
• Have the students take turns holding up a flashcard and asking a classmate what it is.
• Have the classmates reply with the correct answer and encourage their classmate to try again if they get it wrong.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in pairs or small groups to create a poster or a display about a topic of their choice.
• The poster or display should include at least five numbers, five animals, five shapes, and five colors.
• Encourage the students to be creative and to use their imagination.
• As they work on their posters or displays, allow the students to ask for help or -guidance from the teacher or a fellow classmate.
