Materials

  • Alphabet cards with the letters Aa through Ah
  • Short a worksheet (see below)
  • Pencils and erasers

Warm-up

  • Review the alphabet and familiarize students with the letters Aa through Ah. Have them say the sounds that each letter makes.
  • Show the students the alphabet cards with the letters Aa through Ah and ask them to raise their hand when they see the letter A. Repeat with the letters Bb through Hh.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the letter A and its corresponding sound /a/.
  • Demonstrate how to write the letter A on the whiteboard or paper.
  • Have the students repeat the sound /a/ after you as you write the letter A on the board.
  • Have the students repeat the sound /a/ when you say the word "apple" several times.
  • Pass out the alphabet cards with the letters Aa through Ah and have the students repeat the sound /a/ when you point to each letter.

  • Have the students work in pairs and take turns writing the letter A on the whiteboard or paper and saying the sound /a/ when they do so.

  • Review the importance of knowing the letters of the alphabet and how they represent sounds.
  • Have the students share something they learned about short a during the lesson.
