Objectives & Outcomes

  • Children will be able to name and identify different parts of the human body.

Materials

  • Pictures of the human body
  • Pen and paper for each child
  • Markers or crayons

Warm-up

  • Show the children a picture of the human body and ask them to name the different parts they see.
  • Write the names on the board as a list.
  • Ask the children if they can think of any other parts of the human body that are not on the list. Write these on the board as well.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the children another picture of the human body and ask them to name the different parts again.
  • Explain to the children that the human body is made up of many different parts, and that these parts work together to help us live our lives.
  • Use the handouts to provide more detailed information about the different parts of the human body.
  • Ask the children to pay attention and listen as you go through the list and explain what each part does.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the children into small groups and give each group a set of colored pencils or markers.
  • Have the children use the colored pencils or markers to draw a picture of the human body, including all of the different parts.
  • As the children work, walk around and provide assistance as needed.
  • When the children are finished, allow them to share their drawings with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the children take a piece of paper and crumple it up into a ball.
  • Ask the children to imagine that their paper ball is the human body.
  • Have the children draw their paper ball human body and label the different parts.
  • When the children are finished, have them hold up their drawings and call on individual students to come to the front of the class and identify the different parts of their human body.

Closure

  • Review the different parts of the human body that the children learned about in the lesson.
  • Ask the children to share one thing they learned about the human body today.

Assessment

  • Observe the children during independent practice to assess their understanding of the different parts of the human body.
  • Collect the children's collages and observe their accuracy and ability to name the different parts.
