Objectives & Outcomes:

Materials

  • Jolly phonics alphabet cards
  • Writing paper
  • Pencils

Warm-Up

  • Review the letters of the alphabet with the students. Ask them to name each letter as you point to it on a whiteboard or chart.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any words that start with the letter "ch."
  • Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any words that end with the letter "ch."
  • Write their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the sound of the letter "ch."
  • Put a hand mirror or a small mirror in front of the students and ask them to say the sound of "ch."
  • Demonstrate the proper way to make the sound by touching the tip of the tongue to the back of the bottom teeth and then releasing.
  • Have the students try making the sound a few times on their own, guiding them if necessary.
