Topic: preposition and conjunction used in writing personal message

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the functions of prepositions and conjunctions in written communication.
• Be able to identify and appropriately use prepositions and conjunctions in personal messages.

Materials

• Examples of personal messages
• Handouts with preposition and conjunction definitions and examples
• Writing paper and pencils/pens

Warm-up

• Have students briefly read the examples of personal messages and underline any prepositions and conjunctions they see.
• Ask students to explain the functions of the prepositions and conjunctions they underlined.

Direct Instruction

• Write the word preposition on the board and have students define it as a word that shows the relation of a noun or a pronoun to another word in a sentence.
• Write the word conjunction on the board and have students define it as a word that connects words or phrases in a sentence.
• Have students turn to a new page in their notebooks and underline any prepositions and conjunctions they see in the personal messages.
• Ask students to explain the functions of the prepositions and conjunctions they underlined.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify the prepositions and conjunctions in the personal messages.
• Have each pair share their findings with the class and discuss the functions of the prepositions and conjunctions.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the personal messages and rewrite it using different prepositions and conjunctions.
• Have students give their rewritten message to a classmate, who will read it out loud to the class.
• Have the class discuss the differences in meaning and tone between the original and rewritten messages.

Closure

• Review the different functions of prepositions and conjunctions in writing.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about prepositions and conjunctions in this lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of prepositions and conjunctions.
• Collect and review the different paragraphs written by students for proper use of prepositions and conjunctions.
