Topic: How did establishing settlements lead to the first development of farms?

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain how the first settlements led to the development of farms during the Neolithic revolution.

Materials

• Picture cards of settlements and farms
• Construction paper, scissors, glue, and markers for independent practice activities

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever been to a farm or know anyone who works on a farm.
• Ask them to share their experiences and what they saw on the farm.
• Ask them what they think led to the development of farms.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that before the Neolithic Revolution, people lived as hunter-gatherers, moving from place to place to find food.
• Explain that the Neolithic Revolution was the first development of farms, and it happened because people began to settle in one place and start to grow their own food.
• Show pictures of different types of farms and explain how they differ from one another (e.g. farms that grow different types of crops, farms that raise different types of animals).
• Discuss the benefits of having farms, such as being able to produce a lot of food and having a stable source of food.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of pictures of different types of farms.
• Have the students use the pictures to create a chart that compares and contrasts the different types of farms.
• As a class, discuss the similarities and differences among the different types of farms.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one type of farm to research in more detail.
• Have the students create a project that presents their findings, such as a poster, a presentation, or a written report.

Closure

• Review the key points of the lesson and discuss the importance of farms in human civilization.
• Ask the students to reflect on what they learned by writing a short paragraph about their favorite farm animal and why they like it.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their presentations.
• Collect and grade the students' paragraphs for understanding of the topic.
