Topic: Causes of Informal Sector

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and analyze the reasons for the existence of the informal sector.

Materials

• Handout with information on the informal sector
• Classroom projection system or other visual aids

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of the informal sector.
• Ask them to describe what the informal sector is.
• Discuss the importance of the informal sector and its role in the economy.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that the informal sector refers to all economic activities that take place outside of the formal sector, which is the sector of the economy that is regulated by the government and follows its rules and regulations.
• Provide examples of informal sector activities, such as street trading, small-scale manufacturing, and household services.
• Explain that the reasons for the existence of the informal sector can be categorized into two main groups: economic and social. Economic reasons include the lack of formal employment opportunities, the lack of access to credit and other resources, and the desire to avoid paying taxes or other fees. Social reasons include cultural norms and personal preferences.
• Use the handouts to discuss each of the causes of the informal sector in more detail, providing examples and illustrations as needed.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and have each group discuss one of the causes of the informal sector.
• Have each group present their findings to the class.
• As a class, discuss the reasons for the existence of the informal sector and how they relate to the economic and social causes discussed in the guided practice.
• Ask students to identify ways in which the government can address the issues related to the informal sector discussed in the guided practice.

Independent Practice

• Have students research one of the causes of the informal sector that they did not have the opportunity to discuss in the guided practice.
• Have students write a short report explaining the cause they have researched and how it contributes to the existence of the informal sector.
• Have students submit their reports to the teacher for grading.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson and have students summarize what they have learned about the causes of the informal sector.
• Remind students of the importance of the informal sector in developing countries and how it affects the population.

• Collect and review the group presentations or reports to assess students' understanding of the topic.
• Administer a quiz or test to assess students' understanding of the causes of the informal sector and their impacts on developing countries.
