Free Belonging Lesson Plan for Kindergarten Students

Topic: Belonging

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand that they belong to a family, a community, and a country.
• Students will be able to describe the characteristics that make them special and unique.

Materials

• Pictures of different families, communities, and countries
• Whiteboard or chalkboard and markers
• Index cards and pen or pencil

Warm-up

• Ask the students to raise their hand if they know what a family is. Ask a few students to share their understanding of a family.

Direct Instruction

• Show the children pictures or objects that represent different types of families, communities, and countries. Ask the children to identify and name each one.
• Discuss with the children the importance of belonging to a family, community, and country. Emphasize that we all belong to a family, community, and country and we are all different and unique.

Guided Practice

• Divide the children into small groups. Give each group a set of pictures or objects that represent different types of families, communities, and countries.
• Have the children work together to create a collage or mobile of all the different types of families, communities, and countries.
• As the children work, circulate and help as needed.

Independent Practice

• Give each child a large piece of construction paper and some crayons or markers.
• Have the children use the materials to create their own collage or mobile of the different types of families, communities, and countries they learned about in the guided practice.
• Encourage the children to talk to each other and work together as they create their collages or mobiles.

Closure

• Have the children share their completed collages or mobiles with the group.
• Ask the children to point out the different images and explain why they chose to include them in their collages or mobiles.
• Review the different types of families, communities, and countries that were discussed during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the children during the independent practice activity and look for understanding of the different types of families, communities, and countries.
• Have the children share their completed collages or mobiles with the group and ask them to explain why they chose the images they did and how they are similar or different from each other.
