Topic: Organic Compounds and Their Uses

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to recognize general classes or organic compounds and their uses.

Materials

• Handouts with examples of different organic compounds and their uses
• Organic compound classification chart (optional)

Warm-up

• Show the students a few examples of different organic compounds and ask them to name the class to which the compound belongs and its uses.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the students to the basic concepts of organic chemistry and the naming conventions associated with organic compounds.
• Explain that organic compounds are comprised of carbon and hydrogen atoms, which are bonded together in a variety of ways to form different chemical structures.
• Introduce the students to the different classes of organic compounds, including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aryl compounds, and heteroaromatic compounds.
• For each class, explain the basic structure and naming conventions, and provide examples of common compounds in each class.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a handout with examples of common organic compounds in each class.
• Have the students identify the class and naming convention for each compound, and discuss any questions or ideas they have about the structure or function of the compound.
• Bring the students back together and discuss the examples as a group, encouraging the students to share their insights and knowledge about the class and naming conventions of the compounds.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to identify and name additional organic compounds given to them by the teacher.
• Encourage the students to use their knowledge of the classes and naming conventions from the guided practice to make inferences about the structures and functions of the compounds.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson, including the importance of organic compounds in our daily lives and the different classes and naming conventions for them.
• Ask the students to share something they learned about organic compounds today.

Assessment

• Collect and grade the students' worksheets and presentations.
• Consider having the students take a quiz on the different classes of organic compounds and their naming conventions.
