Topic: Cell division

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the concept of the cell cycle and the different types of cell division.

Materials

• Diagram of the cell cycle
• Examples of dividing cells (e.g. dividing bacterium, dividing amoeba, dividing plant cells)
• Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen a cell division before (e.g. a parent dividing a piece of cake with their child, a teacher dividing students into groups for a class activity).
• Ask students to describe what they saw and how the cell division occurred.
• Ask students if they know what a cell division is and what it is used for.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that a cell division is the process by which a single cell divides into two new cells.
• Discuss the stages of cell division: interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.
• Show the students the pictures of the cell division stages and explain what is happening in each stage.
• Discuss the purpose of each stage of cell division.

Guided Practice
