Topic: Comprehension of narrative texts

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to read and understand narrative texts by identifying and analyzing the main events, characters, and themes of the story.

Materials

  • A copy of a narrative text for each student (e.g. short story, chapter from a novel)
  • Handouts with questions for guided reading and analysis

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a recent event or situation that they found interesting or exciting. Have them share their experiences with a partner.
  • Write down their responses on the Board and talk about the different elements of a story (characters, events, setting, etc.).

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of narrative texts and explain that these are stories that are intended to be read and understood.
  • Discuss the different elements of a narrative text (characters, events, setting, etc.) and provide examples of each.
  • Demonstrate how to use the strategies to comprehensively read and understand a narrative text.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs and give each pair a narrative text to read.
  • Have them use the strategies and identify the different elements of the text as they read.
  • Have them share their observations with the class and discuss any differences or similarities in their readings.
  • Have the class work together to create a chart listing the different elements of the text and examples of each from the given narrative text.
  • Discuss the importance of comprehensively reading and understanding a narrative text and how the strategies can be used to achieve this goal.
  • Assign a different narrative text for students to practice the strategies on their own.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a narrative text of their own to read and complete a reading comprehension worksheet for it.
  • Have them use the strategies to comprehensively read and understand the text, and fill in the blanks on the worksheet with evidence from the text.
  • Have them submit their worksheets for grading.

Closure:

  • Summarize the main points of the lesson and remind students of the importance of comprehensive reading and understanding of narrative texts in order to gain information and appreciate the story.
  • Have students share their thoughts on the lesson and anything they found interesting or confusing.

Assessment:

  • Collect and grade the summaries written by students as a formative assessment.
  • Use formative and summative assessments, including quizzes and tests, to evaluate students' understanding of the concepts and skills taught in the lesson.
