Topic: Social dances

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify different social dances and their characteristics.

Materials

• Images of various social dances (e.g. waltz, tango, salsa, foxtrot, polka)
• Handouts with information about the different dances

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever attended a social dance event before and ask them to share their experiences.
• Ask students to think of a social dance they would like to learn and share with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of social dances and their role in society.
• Discuss the different types of social dances, such as waltz, tango, and salsa.
• Show students some basic steps for each type of social dance.
• Demonstrate how to properly hold a partner and lead them through the dance steps.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into pairs and provide each pair with a dance mat or a piece of cardboard to use as a dance floor.
• Have students work with their partner to practice the basic steps of the social dance they have been introduced to.
• Encourage students to be creative and have fun as they learn new skills.

Independent Practice
