Topic: Using AI to compose music

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand how AI is being used to compose music and the potential benefits and risks of this technology.

Materials

• Computers with internet access
• Examples of AI-composed music (can be provided or accessed online)
• Musical instruments (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of AI and what it is. Allow a few students to share their ideas.
• Play a song for the class and ask students if they think it was composed by a human or by AI. Allow them to give reasons for their answer.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of AI and how it is being used to compose music.
• Play a few examples of music composed by AI, and have students listen for any differences or similarities to human-composed music.
• Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using AI to compose music.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to listen to a short piece of human-composed music and ask questions about the composition or purpose of the music.
• Have each pair then play the music for a AI-composed piece and ask the same questions.
• Have students compare and contrast the two composers and their approach to creating music.

• Have students use the provided tools to create their own piece of music, following the steps outlined in the tutorial.
• Encourage students to be creative and try different options for variables such as melody, tempo, or instrumentation.

Closure

• Ask students to share their compositions with the class and discuss the process they went through to create their song.
• Discuss the pros and cons of using AI to compose music and ask students what they think the future of music creation will look like.

• Evaluate students' compositions based on their use of AI and their ability to create a unique and enjoyable song.
