Topic: Key signatures

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify key signatures in music and understand their meaning.

Materials

• Music notation paper
• A variety of music pieces with different key signatures

Warm-up

• Have students listen to a piece of music and try to determine what key it is in.
• Write the names of several different keys on the board and have students pick one and search for it in the music notation paper.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of key signatures and their role in indicating the key of a piece of music.
• Demonstrate how to identify key signatures by looking for the patterns of sharp and flat notes in the music notation paper.
• Review the key signatures for the keys that were previously written on the board.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify the key signatures of newly presented music examples.
• Check for understanding by having the pairs share their findings and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a key signature scavenger hunt by hiding key signatures in a selection of music.
• Students will work in groups to identify the hidden key signatures and create a corresponding musical composition.
• Encourage students to be creative and have fun with their compositions.

Closure

• Have students share their compositions with the class.
• Discuss the importance of key signatures in music and how they affect the mood and pitch of a melody.
