Found Sounds Lesson Plan for 9th Grade Students

Topic: Found Sounds

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use the software 'Koala' to create a piece of music by sampling and manipulating sounds they have recorded themselves.

Materials

  • Computers with the sampling software 'Koala' installed
  • Microphones for recording sounds

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a sound that they would like to sample and use in their music. It can be a natural sound that they record in their surroundings, or a sound they create themselves using an instrument or their voice.
  • Have them record their sound using a microphone, and play it back to make sure that it is clear and audible.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of sampling and explain that we will be using the sampling software Koala to create our piece of music.
  • Show students how to open and navigate through the Koala software.
  • Explain the different tools and functions that are available in Koala, such as the sample editor, looping function, and sound effects.
  • Demonstrate how to create a new sample bank and add sounds to it, and how to create a new sample and edit it using the various tools.

Guided Practice:

  • Have students work in pairs to create a short piece of music using the sampling software Koala.
  • Provide guidance and support as needed.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students use the sampling software to create a longer piece of music, using the skills they have learned in class.
  • Encourage students to be creative and to experiment with different sounds and techniques.

Closure:

  • Have students share their songs with the class and discuss the techniques they used and the process of creating their songs.
  • Review the objectives for the lesson and have students reflect on what they have learned.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity to assess their ability to use Koala to create a song and use found sounds effectively.
  • Evaluate students' presentations of their songs during the closure to assess their understanding of the objectives of the lesson.
  • Have students complete a written reflection on the lesson, including what they learned and what they found challenging or interesting.
