Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to solve systems of equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination.

Materials

• Graph paper
• Pencils
• Calculator
• System of equations to solve (provided by teacher)

Warm-up

• Review what a system of equations is and what it is used for.

-Give students a few examples of systems of equations and have them solve them by any method they are familiar with.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the three methods of solving systems of equations: graphing, substitution, and elimination. -Demonstrate how to solve a system of equations using each of the three methods. -Explain the pros and cons of each method and when to use each one.

Guided Practice:

• Give students a system of equations to solve using one of the three methods. -Walk students through the steps of solving the system of equations, providing assistance and guiding questions as needed.

Direct Instruction:

• Provide students with a set of equations on separate worksheets and have them work in pairs to solve the systems of equations using one of the three methods. -Have students share their solutions and explain their reasoning.
• For students who are new to algebra, have them work with a more experienced partner who can help them solve the system of equations.

***For students who are new to algebra, focus on explaining the steps of solving the system of equations rather than on getting the correct answer.***

Independent Practice:

To encourage independent problem solving, have students work on a variety of systems of equations using manipulatives and/or online tools such as IXL.

Closure:

Ask students to share their solutions to the systems of equations in class. Encourage them to explain their reasoning and discuss any challenges they encountered.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the independent practice to assess their understanding of solving systems of equations and their ability to explain their reasoning.
• Collect and review their solutions to the systems of equations as an assessment of their understanding and ability to apply the concept.
