Topic: Real and complex numbers

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define real and complex numbers, and identify and understand their properties and operations.

Materials

• Whiteboard or chalkboard
• Pencils and paper for each student
• Complex number worksheets (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have heard of the imaginary number i, and whether they know what it is.
• Discuss the properties of i and how it can be used to solve equations.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the real number system, including the real numbers and the operations on them (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
• Discuss the concept of a complex number, including the complex number plane and operations on complex numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
• Explain how to simplify and solve equations involving real and complex numbers.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a set of exercises on the complex number plane.
• Walk around the room and assist students as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a complex number project that demonstrates their understanding of the material.
• This could be a presentation, a written report, or a mathematical problem solving.
