Topic: pythagoras

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to find the length of the missing side of a right triangle.

Materials

• A right triangle drawn on a whiteboard or on paper
• A black marker
• A ruler

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have heard of the famous Greek mathematician pythagoras.
• Ask the students what they know about pythagoras and his theorem about right triangles.
• Write down the pythagoras theorem on the whiteboard or on a piece of paper.
• Ask the students to solve the equation for any given right triangle, using a ruler and a black marker to draw the corresponding line.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to the students that pythagoras was a famous mathematician who lived in ancient Greece.
• Tell the students that pythagoras discovered many important mathematical concepts, including the pythagoras theorem.
• Explain to the students that the pythagoras theorem states that for any right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the longest side) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides.
• Show the students the triangle template and have them fill in the missing side with a ruler and a black marker.
• Have the students solve the pythagoras theorem using the template and check their answer using a calculator.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a right triangle template.
• Have the students solve the pythagoras theorem for the missing side of the right triangle and compare their answer to a calculator.
• Ask the students to discuss their reasoning and explain any steps they took to solve the problem.

Independent Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of right triangles to measure.
• Have the students use a ruler and calculator to solve the pythagoras theorem for each right triangle and record their answers on a sheet of paper.
• Ask the students to discuss their results as a group and compare their answers to each other.

Closure

• Review the concept of the pythagoras theorem and how to use it to find the length of the missing side of a right triangle.
• Ask the students to share their favorite parts of the lesson and what they found most -interesting.

Assessment

• Ask the students to solve a problem using the pythagoras theorem and explain their reasoning.
• Have the students draw a right triangle and label the sides and angles. Have them find the missing side and explain their reasoning.
