Topic: Expense Records

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand the importance of keeping an expense record and be able to create a simple one.

Materials

• Pen/pencil and paper for each student
• Sample expense record

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever had to spend money unexpectedly, such as for a trip or an emergency.
• Ask them to share their experiences and explain how they handled the situation.
• Discuss the importance of keeping track of spending in order to avoid financial hardship in the future.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of expense records and explain their purpose.
• Discuss the importance of accurate record-keeping, including date, description, and amount spent.
• Show students an example of a completed expense record and discuss the information it includes.
• Explain the importance of keeping records for at least a few months to ensure they can be used to track spending habits and identify areas for improvement.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a mock expense record.
• Walk around the room and provide assistance as needed.
• Encourage students to use the examples provided and to ask questions if they are unsure about any of the information required.
• After completing the mock record, have students share their work with the class and explain their reasoning for each entry.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a real expense record for a specific period of time (e.g. one month).
• Students should use the examples provided and any additional research they have done to ensure their record is accurate and complete.
• Encourage students to be creative and think critically about their spending habits and the resources used.

Closure

• Have students share their expense records with the class and discuss any interesting or surprising findings.
• Review the importance of keeping expense records and the potential benefits (e.g. saving money, planning for the future).

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to keep an accurate and organized expense record.
• Collect and grade the expense records for accuracy and completeness.
