Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to accurately construct quadrilaterals using given dimensions, and understand the properties of quadrilaterals as a result of their construction.

Materials

• Ruler
• Pencil
• Paper
• Full-size template of a quadrilateral (provided by teacher)

Warm-up

• Ask learners to think about and define what a quadrilateral is. Write their answers on the board.
• Ask learners to provide examples of quadrilaterals. Write their answers on the board.
• Ask learners to describe how they would construct a quadrilateral using given dimensions. Write their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Show learners how to construct a quadrilateral using given dimensions.
• Use the provided materials and demonstrate how to construct a quadrilateral using given dimensions.
• Ask learners to observe and note any patterns or similarities in the way the quadrilaterals are constructed.
• Ask learners to discuss the properties of quadrilaterals that they noticed from the demonstrations.

Guided Practice

• Provide learners with additional dimensions and have them construct a quadrilateral using the given dimensions.
• Have learners work in pairs to compare their constructions and explain any differences.
• As a class, discuss the differences in the constructions and how they affect the properties of the quadrilateral.

Independent Practice

• Have learners use a computer-aided design (CAD) program to create a quadrilateral using the given dimensions.
• Have learners use the CAD program to create multiple quadrilaterals using the given dimensions.
• Have learners analyze the properties of the quadrilaterals and draw any conclusions about the effect of the given dimensions on the properties of the quadrilateral.

Closure

• Review the properties of quadrilaterals and the effect of the given dimensions on these properties.
• Ask learners to share any conclusions they drew about the effect of the given dimensions on the properties of the quadrilateral.

Assessment:

• Observe learners as they construct the quadrilaterals and provide feedback on their accuracy.
• Collect and grade the completed quadrilaterals, evaluating the accuracy of the given dimensions and the conclusions drawn about the effect of the given dimensions on the properties of the quadrilateral.
