Free 9th Grade Design Process Lesson Plan (Manufacturing Cte)

Topic: design process

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the different stages of the design process and explain the purpose of each stage.

Materials

  • Handout with information about the design process
  • Examples of products that illustrate each stage of the design process
  • Construction paper and craft supplies for project work

Warm-Up

  • Begin the class by asking students to share any experiences they have had designing and creating something new. Ask them to describe the process they followed and the steps they took to make their idea a reality.
  • As a class, discuss the importance of the design process in product development and how it can help us create better and more successful products.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the design process and its five main steps: 1) ideation, 2) analysis, 3) planning, 4) prototyping, and 5) testing.
  • Explain each step in more detail, providing examples and visuals as needed.
  • Emphasize the importance of considering user needs and behaviors throughout the process.

Guided Practice:

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of user needs and behaviors to consider for their design.
  • Have students use the design process chart to brainstorm ideas for a prototype that could address the user needs and behaviors they have been given.
  • Have students present their ideas to the group and discuss their thinking behind each step.

Independent Practice:

  • Give students the materials and time needed to build prototypes of their ideas.
  • Have students present their prototype to the class and explain the thought process behind their design.

Closure

  • Review the steps of the design process and discuss the importance of each step.
  • Ask students to reflect on their own process and how they can improve for next time.
  • Encourage students to continue practicing and experimenting with different designs.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the manufacturing process and provide feedback on their use of the design process and their final product.
  • Have students write a reflection on their experience using the design process and what they learned during the project.
