Materials

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever heard of Big Data.
  • Ask them to describe what Big Data is and how it is used.
  • Encourage them to offer examples of how Big Data is used in their everyday lives (e.g. smartphones, social media, etc.)

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of Big Data and explain why it is important.
  • Explain the different types of Big Data (e.g. structured, unstructured, and mixed) and give examples of each.
  • Discuss the risks to personal data that come with the collection and storage of Big Data.
  • Provide examples of how personal data can be used without the individual's consent or knowledge.
  • Explain the importance of data protection laws and how they safeguard personal data.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of hypothetical data.
