Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the effects of malware on data and the different types of malware and their characteristics.

Materials

• Computer with internet access
• Handout with definitions of different types of malware
• Examples of malware (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of malware. Ask them to describe what it is and how it affects a computer.
• Show examples of different types of malware and ask students to give examples of how each type can harm a computer or data.

Direct Instruction

• Define malware and explain what it is.
• Explain how malware can be installed on a computer and how it can affect data and the overall performance of the computer.
• Show examples of different types of malware and describe how they can harm a computer or data.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to research a specific type of malware and its characteristics.
• Have each pair present their findings to the class and explain how the malware they researched can affect a computer or data.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a presentation or written report on the impact of malware on data. They can include examples from the research they conducted during the paired practice activity, as well as any additional research they may have done independently.

Closure

• Discuss the importance of data security, and the potential consequences of allowing malware to enter a system.
• Ask students to share what they learned during the lesson, and how they can help to protect their own data from malware and other threats.

• Observe the students during the project-based activity to assess their understanding of the topic.
• Evaluate the students' presentations on their ability to explain the importance of data security and the potential consequences of allowing malware to enter a system.
