Topic: Italian Alphabet & Pronunciation

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the letters of the Italian alphabet and understand how to pronounce each letter.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast the Italian alphabet with the Spanish alphabet.

Materials

  • Italian alphabet chart or chart with the letters of the Italian alphabet written in both Latin and Italian script
  • Spanish alphabet chart or chart with the letters of the Spanish alphabet written in both Latin and Spanish script
  • Printouts of the letters of the Italian and Spanish alphabets
  • Pencils or pens

Warm-up

  • Have students close their eyes and relax for a few minutes.
  • Then, have students stretch their arms out in front of them and, using their finger, trace the outline of the letters of the Spanish alphabet that they can remember, without looking.
  • Once they have finished, have them turn to a partner and, together, try to remember and trace the outline of the rest of the letters of the Spanish alphabet.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students the Italian alphabet chart and go through each letter, pronouncing it and writing it on the board.
  • As you go through each letter, have students repeat after you, trying to mimic your pronunciation.
  • As a check for understanding, have students repeat the Italian alphabet out loud, without assistance.

Guided Practice

  • Show students a series of images of objects or people in Italian.
  • Have students work in pairs to identify the object or person in Italian and write it on their paper.
  • As a check for understanding, have students read their examples out loud to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Give students a worksheet with a list of object and/or people names in Italian.
  • Have students write the name in Italian on their paper and check their work with a partner.
  • As a check for understanding, have students read their examples out loud to the class.

Closure

  • Review the Italian alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes.
  • Ask students to share something they learned about Italian today.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their pronunciation of the letters of the Italian alphabet.
  • Have students complete a quiz or worksheet where they must write the letters of the Italian alphabet correctly.
