Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to use the future tense to talk about future events.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts with examples of sentences using the future tense

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a future event they are looking forward to.
  • Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students to share their responses with a partner and add any additional events to the list on the board.
  • Encourage students to use the future tense in their responses (will + verb).

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the future tense and its uses.
  • Use examples to demonstrate how to form the future tense using will and the verb.
  • Explain that although the future tense can be used to talk about future events, it can also be used to make predictions and to make suggestions.

Guided Practice:

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group one of the future tense statements from the handout.
  • Have students work together to decide what the verb in the statement should be, and then how to form the future tense using will and the verb.
  • Have each group share their answers with the class and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students choose one of the future tense statements from the handout and use it to create a short narrative or story.
  • Students should use the correct verb tense and punctuation in their story.
  • Allow time for students to share their stories with the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson with the students.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about the future tense today.

Assessment

  • Collect and review the sentences written by students in the independent practice activity.
  • Ask a student to orally or written demonstrate the use of a future tense verb in a sentence.
