Topic: Bullying in schools

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the different types of bullying that occur in schools.
• Students will be able to explain how they can intervene in bullying situations.

Materials

• Definition of bullying
• Examples of bullying behaviors
• Handouts with steps for intervening in bullying situations

Warm-up

• Ask students to share their experiences with bullying. What happened, how they felt, how they dealt with it.
• List the different types of bullying on the board (physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying, cyberbullying).
• Ask students if they know what each type of bullying entails.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the modal verbs can, could, must, have to, and have got to and their usage.
• Show examples of each modal verb and give a brief explanation of its meaning.
• Have students work in pairs to complete the activity sheet, using the modal verbs to create sentences that describe different situations related to bullying in schools.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs again to complete another activity sheet, this time using the modal verbs to create sentences that describe their own experiences with bullying in schools.
• Go over the examples as a class and have students share their responses.

Independent Practice

• For independent practice, have students create a poster or presentation to share with the class on how they can prevent bullying in schools. They can consider strategies such as being a good friend, being a good listener, and standing up for others. Encourage them to be creative and give them the freedom to be original.

Closure

• As a class, review the key takeaways and discuss any additional strategies for preventing bullying in schools that were brought up during the independent practice.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned or found particularly interesting about the topic.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the group discussion and independent practice to assess their understanding of the material.
• Use the class presentation or written reports as a formal assessment of the students’ understanding of the material.
