Objectives

• Students will be able to identify the purpose and structure of a speech, and use audience analysis to tailor the message and delivery for maximum impact.

Materials

• Examples of speeches for analysis (e.g. political speeches, motivational speeches)
• Writing prompt: Write a speech about the importance of staying in school and getting a good education

Warm-up

• Ask students to think about a time when they felt strongly about a topic and tried to convince others to see their point of view.
• Have them share their experience with the class and discuss how effective they were in convincing others.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of speech writing and explain that a speech is a spoken presentation that is supported by written text.
• Discuss the purpose of a speech, which is to communicate a message or argument to an audience.
• Explain the parts of a speech, including the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
• Discuss the importance of planning a speech, including brainstorming ideas, organizing the ideas into a structure, and drafting the speech.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a topic and have them brainstorm ideas for a speech.
• Have students organize their ideas into a structure, such as introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
• Have students draft a first draft of their speech, using the structure they have created.
• Have students share their speeches with a peer or teacher for feedback.

Independent Practice
