Writing A Report Lesson Plan for 9th Grade Students

Topic: Artificial intelligence vs. human intelligence

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to analyze the different aspects of artificial intelligence and compare them with human intelligence, and argue whether artificial intelligence is better or worse than human intelligence.

Materials

  • Laptops or computers with internet access
  • Artificial intelligence videos or articles (e.g. Artificial intelligence: the good, the bad, and the scary, 50 things robots will do in the next 50 years, etc.)
  • Handouts with definitions of artificial intelligence and human intelligence

Warm-up

  • Ask students what they know about artificial intelligence. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students what they know about human intelligence. Write their responses on the board.
  • Circle any common themes or misconceptions.

Direct Instruction

  • Define artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence (HI).
  • Discuss the history of AI, including notable milestones and key contributors.
  • Explain the different approaches to AI, such as deep learning, machine learning, and natural language processing.
  • Define human intelligence (HI) and discuss its characteristics, including memory, reasoning, and communication.
  • Compare and contrast AI and HI, including their strengths and weaknesses.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to research and present on a specific AI application, such as voice recognition or facial recognition.
  • As a class, discuss the different elements of the application and how they work.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic of their own to research and write a brief report on. This could be a project-based assignment where students work on a series of reports over a period of time, or it could be a single report on a topic of their choice.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson and have students share what they learned.
  • Ask students to reflect on the topic and think about how artificial intelligence and human intelligence compare and contrast.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and look for them to demonstrate an understanding of the topic.
  • Review their reports and presentations and assess their ability to synthesize and reflect on their learning.
