Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever had to write a complaint letter.
• Ask them to share their experience and what they wrote in their letter.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that a complaint letter is a written communication to a company or organization about a problem or issue.
• Introduce the structure of a complaint letter, including the heading, body, and closing.
• Model how to write a heading, including the name of the company and the date.
• Demonstrate how to write the body of the letter, including the details of the problem and how it has affected you or others.
• Show how to conclude the letter with a respectful request for action and a signature.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to write a draft of a complaint letter to a designated company or organization.
• Provide guidance and support as needed, to ensure that students are using the correct format and including the necessary information.
• Allow time for students to revise and edit their drafts, if needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a company or organization to which they would like to send a complaint letter.
• Have students write their complaint letters, following the guidelines provided above.
• Allow time for students to review and revise their letters, if needed.

Closure

• Have students share their complaint letters with the class.
• Ask students to reflect on the process of writing the letter and the importance of expressing dissatisfaction through writing.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their letters.
• Collect and review their completed complaint letters to assess their understanding of the process of writing a letter of complaint.
