Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and use the present tense of regular and irregular verbs in Latin.

Materials:

  • Verbs list (including regular and irregular verbs)
  • Latin sentences with verbs in the present tense
  • Index cards
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of tense and its different forms (past, present, future).
  • Ask students to provide examples of each tense and write them on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by reviewing the present tense of -ar verbs. Show examples on the board and have students repeat after you.
  • Next, move on to the present tense of -er and -ir verbs. Again, show examples on the board and have students repeat after you.
  • Finally, review the irregular present tense forms of -er and -ir verbs. Write these on the board and have students memorize them.

Guided Practice:

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of verb cards. Have the students work together to create sentences using the present tense forms of the verbs on the cards.
  • After they have created their sentences, have each group present their sentences to the class and check for accuracy.

Independent practice:

  • Have students choose a topic that interests them and write a paragraph using verb tenses in the present tense. Helps them understand the present tense better.

Closure

  • Review the present tenses and their definitions and have students give examples of each.
  • Ask students to share their paragraphs with the class and discuss the use of verb tenses.

Assessment

  • Collect and grade the paragraphs written by students as a form of assessment.
