Topic: Present Continuous

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to use the present continuous correctly when speaking and writing.
• Students will be able to create negative sentences and questions using the present continuous.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Worksheets with examples of present continuous sentences

Warm-up

• Review the meanings of the present simple and past simple.
• Ask students to provide examples of each.
• Write the examples on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the present continuous tense, explaining that it is used to talk about actions that are happening now or are ongoing.
• Write the present continuous tense on the whiteboard and have students copy it into their notebooks.
• Provide examples of how to use the present continuous, both with and without time expressions.
• Have students practice using the present continuous, both with and without time expressions.

Guided Practice

• Give students a few sentences with actions happening now or ongoing and have them identify the present continuous tense and write it under the sentence.
• Have students work in pairs to practice using the present continuous tense on each other.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a pet or animal and write a short paragraph about what their pet or animal is doing now. Have them use the present continuous tense in their writing.

Closure

• Review the examples given in the lesson.
• Ask students to share their paragraphs about their pets or animals with the class.

Assessment

• Observation: watch students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the present continuous.
• Collect the students' paragraphs and use a checklist to assess their ability to use the present continuous correctly, make correct negative sentences, and ask appropriate questions.
