9th Grade Plot Development Lesson Plan

Topic: Plot Development

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define plot development and describe how the plot develops in a given story.

Materials

  • A short story or excerpt from a novel for class discussion
  • Handout with examples of plot development

Warm-up

  • Ask students to describe the plot of a movie or book they recently enjoyed. Ask them to describe how the plot developed and how it captured their interest.
  • Introduce the concept of plot development and its importance in storytelling.

Direct Instruction

  • Discuss the three stages of plot development: exposition, rising action, and climax.
  • Exposition refers to the introduction of the characters, setting, and premise of the story. It establishes the starting point for the plot and sets the tone for what is to come.
  • Rising action is the series of events that builds up to the climax. It creates tension and suspense, and introduces complications that must be resolved.
  • The climax is the turning point of the story, where the conflict is reaching its peak and the resolution is imminent. It is the most dramatic and exciting part of the plot.
  • Use examples from popular stories to illustrate each stage of plot development.

Guided Practice

  • Give the students a story with a well-developed plot and have them identify the exposition, rising action, and climax.
  • Have the students work in small groups to create a chart that summarizes the plot development of the story.
  • As a class, discuss the plot development of the story and how it fits into the three stages of plot development.

Independent Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a different story to analyze.
  • Each group should create a plot development chart for their story, using the three stages of plot development.
  • Groups should present their plot development charts to the class and explain how the plot of their story develops.

Closure

  • Review the three stages of plot development and how they are used to create a story arc in a plot development chart.
  • Ask the students to share something they learned about plot development during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the interactive poster activity to assess their understanding of the three stages of plot development.
  • Have the students write a short paragraph explaining how the plot develops in a particular story they have read or watched.
