Topic: Phrasal verbs

Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand how phrasal verbs are used in English
• To be able to use phrasal verbs correctly in sentences

Materials

• Examples of phrasal verbs in context
• Pen and paper for note-taking

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of phrasal verbs before.
• Ask students to share some examples of phrasal verbs they know.
• Write the examples on the board and discuss how they are used in sentences.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of phrasal verbs and their meaning (a verb combined with a adverb or a preposition to form a new verb with a different meaning).
• Provide examples of phrasal verbs and show how they are used in sentences.
• Explain the different types of phrasal verbs (e.g. separable and non-separable).

Guided Practice

• Give the students some examples of phrasal verbs and have them identify the verb, adverb/preposition and its meaning.
• Have the students work in pairs to provide examples of their own and explain their uses.
• Go over the examples as a class and discuss their uses.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to create a project that illustrates the uses of phrasal verbs.
• Each group should come up with at least 3 examples of phrasal verbs and explain their uses.
• Have each group present their project to the class.

Closure

• Review the examples of phrasal verbs that were presented in the project presentations.
• Remind the students of the different uses of phrasal verbs and how they can add more meaning to a sentence.
• Ask the students to share one phrasal verb example that they found interesting or difficult.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the class discussion and during the independent practice to assess their understanding of the topic.
• Collect the students' participation and presentation portfolios and evaluate them based on their understanding of phrasal verbs and their ability to use them in sentences.
