Grammar Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: Nouns

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify nouns and give examples of nouns in sentences.

Materials

  • Whiteboard or blackboard
  • Markers or chalk
  • Handouts with nouns written on them (e.g. cat, dog, chair, apple, book, etc.)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they can think of any nouns that are familiar to them. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students if they can give an example of a noun that they mentioned. For example, if a student says "cat," ask them to give an example of a cat.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a noun to the students. Explain that a noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. Write the word "Noun" on the board and have students repeat it after you.
  • Give examples of nouns to the students. For example, you can say "The boy is running in the park. The park is a noun. The boy and the park are both names for people or things."
  • Explain that a sentence must have a noun and a verb to be complete.
  • Ask the students to give you an example of a sentence with a noun and a verb. For example, you can say "The boy is running in the park. The park is a noun, and is running is a verb."

Guided Practice

  • Give the students a sentence strip with a noun and a verb on it. Ask them to underline the noun and verb in the sentence.
  • Have the students work in pairs to construct their own sentences with a noun and a verb. Give them practice sentence strips with nouns and verbs on them and have them use the strips to create their own sentences.
  • As a class, go over the sentences that the students created and correct any errors.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a blank paper and a pencil. Ask them to underline the noun and verb in each sentence that you read to them.
  • Have the students work in pairs to identify the noun and verb in each sentence that their partner reads to them. They should mark the noun and verb on their paper with a check mark.
  • Have the students work in small groups to create a short story using nouns and verbs. Each group member should contribute at least one noun and one verb to the story.
  • Have the students present their stories to the class. Assessment: -For the independent practice activity, have the students turn in their completed stories. For each incorrect noun or verb, have the students lose a point. The group with the most points wins.

Closure:

  • Review the importance of using nouns and verbs in sentences.
  • Encourage the students to pay attention to the nouns and verbs in their reading and writing.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they are using nouns and verbs in their writing.
  • Collect and review the students' written sentences to assess their understanding of using nouns and verbs in sentences.
