  • Model how to cite a source and use text evidence by giving an example.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a handout with a few paragraphs written by the teacher on a topic related to the class.
  • Have students work in pairs to identify and cite the sources used in the writing, and then use text evidence to support the claims made in the writing.
  • Have students share their work with the class and explain their choices.

Independent Practice

  • Give students an assignment to write a paragraph on a topic related to the class using sources and text evidence.
  • Have students use a citation tool (such as a footnote or a citation -page) to cite their sources and include a list of the sources in their writing.
  • Have students submit their work and have the teacher review it for accuracy and quality.
