9th Grade Banksy Documentary Lesson Plan

Topic: Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the significance of Banksy and outlaw art in today's society.

Materials

• Copies of "Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art"
• Writing materials

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about Banksy. Write their responses on the board.
• Discuss the role of art in society and the different ways artists can express themselves.

Direct Instruction

• Play the first few minutes of the Banksy documentary for students to watch and get interested in the topic.
• Ask questions to check for understanding, such as "What is Banksy's background and what is his art style like?"
• Explain the main themes of the documentary, such as the rise of outlaw art and the controversy surrounding Banksy's work.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and assign each group a specific topic from the documentary.
• Have students use the notes they took during the direct instruction to create a short presentation for their group explaining their assigned topic.
• Have students present their presentations to the class and encourage discussion on the topic.

Independent Practice

• Assign a project for students to research and create a presentation on an aspect of street art that they find interesting.
• Encourage students to use the resources provided (e.g. internet, library) and to seek out additional information.
• Have students present their presentations to the class.

Closure

• Review the main points of the documentary and have students reflect on what they learned.
• Ask students to share any new insights or perspectives they gained from the independent practice project.

Assessment

• Collect and grade the independent practice projects
• Use a rubric to evaluate the teacher’s participation in the documentary's production and the quality of the resulting videos
• Use a rubric to evaluate the students’ understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson, including the role of dissent in art and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
