Topic: Adverbs

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify adverbs in a sentence and explain the purpose of adverbs in a sentence.

Materials

• Sentences with adverbs
• Flashcards with adverbs on one side and definitions on the other side (optional)

Warm-up

• Write a few sentences with adverbs on the board. Ask the students to identify the adverbs in the sentences and explain what they mean.
• Review the definition of adverbs and how they can modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

Direct Instruction

• Review the definitions of adverbs and the types of adverbs (time, place, manner, etc.).
• Demonstrate how to use adverbs properly in a sentence by replacing an adjective with an adverb and using the adverb to modify the verb.
• Provide additional examples and have the students practice identifying and using adverbs in sentences.

Guided Practice

• Pass out the adverb cards and have the students work in pairs to play a game similar to go fish. One student will give a card to their partner and ask if the card is an adverb. If it is, the student will use it in a sentence. For example: "Is this card an adverb? Yes, it is! Use it in a sentence to modify the verb 'walk'. I walk slowly."
• If the students are having trouble identifying the adverbs, the teacher can provide additional guidance or examples.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in groups to create a short skit or puppet show that demonstrates the meaning of several adverbs. The students can use the adverb cards to add -modify-specific-verbs to their skit or puppet show.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson:*Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.*Adverbs can be placed before or after the -modify-specific-verbs.
• Ask the students to share one adverb that they learned about during the lesson.

Assessment:

• Observe the students during the group and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of adverbs.
• Collect and review the students' written work to assess their ability to identify and use adverbs in a written sentence.
