Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define what paper & board is and the different types of paper & board.

• Students will be able to describe how paper & board is manufactured and the impact it has on the environment.

Materials

• Copies of different types of paper & board (e.g. copy paper, cardboard, construction paper, paperboard)
• Handouts with information about the different types of paper & board
• Diagrams or videos demonstrating how paper & board is manufactured
• Calculators
• Notebooks and pens/pencils

Warm-Up

• Review what is known about paper & board and ask students to share any prior knowledge they have about the topic.
• As a class, make a list of the different types of paper & board that will be discussed today.

Direct Instruction

• Begin by explaining that paper is made from the cellulose fibers found in plants, while board is made from the harder fibers found in trees.
• Show examples of different types of paper and board and discuss the characteristics that make them different from one another (e.g. color, thickness, durability).
• Explain how paper is made by pulping the fibers and filtering out the water using various methods (e.g. mechanical, chemical).
